NO CHAIN 6: Warp

warp
It is harder for women, perhaps to be 'one-pointed,' much harder for them to clear space around whatever it is they want to do beyond household chores and family life. Their lives are fragmented... the cry not so much for a 'a room of one's own' as time of one's own. Conflict become acute, whatever it may be about, when there is no margin left on any day in which to try at least to resolve it.
-May Sarton, A Journal of Solitude
EDITOR’S LETTER
Do you ever feel like you are living,
really living, in the margins of the day?
In the morning when my first thoughts travel through, in the evening, peeling paint and glue from my hands, in bed listening for the difference between wind & traffic & river sounds— these are times when I know I am really in it.
Other times are warped. The center of the day is so full of motion, the memories distort as soon as they’re made.
warp
v. become or cause to become bent or twisted out of shape, typically as a result of the effects of heat or dampness.
v. cause to become abnormal or strange; have a distorting effect on.
n. the threads on a loom over and under which other threads (the weft) are passed to make cloth.
n. the rope attached at one end to a fixed point and used for moving or mooring a ship.
I want to be moored to this world. We need the warp to pass through, to weave a good life. But how bent and distorting the anchoring threads can become! What a funhouse mirror.
